The Simple Feeling of Being: Experiencing Integral Consciousness, Terry Patten

Integral theory is not just a bunch of abstract concepts. It describes the world and human experience as it is. Thus, Integral theory must be felt to be known fully. - Ken Wilber

In this 2-hour workshop, we will come together to connect with each other in the feeling spirit of Integral Consciousness. We will move our bodies, meditate, and speak from the heart in a way that invokes an Integral "We-Space." This is intended as an occasion at the beginning of our week of Integral Leadership in Action that will enable us to open up and connect with our bodies, minds and spirit, with each other, with emptiness, with fullness, and most essentially with the seamless inseparability of it all.

Introduction to Integral, Bert Parlee.

This is a required/recommended workshop for anyone new to Integral. Bert will address the basic aspects of the AQAL model (All Quadrants & All Levels), including the concepts of levels, lines, states, stages, and perspectives, with practical applications of how the models have applicability in everyday life. His overview will also address theories of key Integralists such as Ken Wilber, Clare Graves, Don Beck, and others. This introductory overview will also lay the groundwork for further discussions on the developing transition to global frameworks during the coming decades and address the growing pains that will be involved with consciousness transformation.
If you are new to Integral, we encourage you to attend this pre-conference session.

Using Dialogue to Nurture Integral Awareness, T Poling.

Have you found that many approaches to managing change or handling crisis often yield results which are incomplete, fragmented, fleeting and, in some cases, damaging?

Learn how to use large-scale dialogue to nurture and sustain integral awareness - a comprehensive, integrated, balanced and shared worldview - that enables you and your organization to include, and yet transcend, the options available from any single perspective. Learn to use this collective vantage point - or "We-Space" - to discover and co-create those scenarios, solutions, and actions with the greatest scope and greatest depth, thereby improving your choices and chances for sustainable success.

The Frothy Edge of Integral Leadership, Cindy Wigglesworth, panelists: Jeff Salzman, Terry Patten, Gary Hawke, Zak Stein, Clint Fuhs, and Robb Smith.

Cutting edge integral thinkers share what is most exciting and new in the Integral Worldview.

Keynotes:

Global Transformation: A Large-Scale Psychology Perspective on Design, Change, and Transformation, Don Beck.

Dr Clare Graves described a time when life conditions would arise which would force us into a major change - a Momentous Leap - to second tier (Yellow+) forms of leadership. Complex global problems will require new forms of thinking, decision-making and new processes. We will, at first, bring back the "old wineskins" to deal with the "new wine" but they will leak. Listen to Don Beck address the challenge of creating MeshWORKS solutions...including his most recent work in Palestine and Israel.

Growing Resonant Leaders for a Better Tomorrow, Francis Johnston.

We know that Emotional Intelligence has been shown to differentiate average performers from outstanding performers in every job category ever tested. But did you know that your emotional intelligence also impacts the productivity of everyone who works for you or around you? Emotions are contagious. And your ability to master your own emotions and access them appropriately is key to creating a productive high-engagement workplace. Integral Leaders will need to lead with resonance to lead in times of turbulence, and to lead the world to a better tomorrow. Learn how from a central author, practitioner and executive coach in the field.

Integral Theory and Conscious Capitalism, Rand Stagen.

Integral Theory and Conscious Capitalism Integral theory provides an ideal framework for addressing the relationship between consciousness and capitalism. Drawing on nearly a decade of practical application, Rand Stagen will reveal insights from fieldwork with entrepreneurial companies committed to utilizing their business platforms to promote industry and societal transformation. The presentation will provide detailed case studies illustrating best practices for addressing development in the individual, team, and organizational dimensions (I, We, It). Rand will share strategies that his consulting firm has used to skillfully translate the AQAL model for a range of senior executive mindsets (including traditional, modern, and post-modern). Learn why so many integral practitioners struggle to demonstrate the value of integral theory within business and identify ways to design a more effective delivery approach. The highly interactive format will include time for Q&A.

Plenary Sessions:

Jeff Carriera with Elizabeth DeBold "Transcending Survival Fears to Evolve in Difficult Times: The EnlightenNext Discovery Cycle"

Many of us see the challenges facing us—personally, culturally, and globally—as an opportunity for a significant shift. Yet when the pressure is on, most people find themselves motivated by survival rather than by their highest values. Nothing can change unless, in the face of challenge, we develop the deepest motivation to place evolution before personal fears. EnlightenNext has embarked on an evolutionary initiative called the Discovery Cycle to facilitate our individual and collective motivation toward evolution so that we can bring about the change that we all want. In this session, we will present the theory and practice behind this ambitious initiative. The Discovery Cycle, anchored by an annual retreat and conference, is envisioned as an ongoing effort to catalyze, facilitate, and organize a global inquiry into individual and cultural evolution. The aim is to develop a cadre of thought leaders who have the spiritual strength and perspective to profoundly transform our response to challenge at the leading edge of culture.

Polarity Management: A Critical Skill Addressing Turbulence and Global Transformation, Barry Johnson.

Not everything is a problem to be solved. Many of the issues we face are in fact polarities that must be managed. Polarities are indestructible and interdependent opposites where a positive outcome requires us to constructively access both poles (like inhaling and exhaling are needed to stay alive). Higher stages of leadership development require this skill. Learn an elegant tool for addressing this complexity - one that can take conversations to a much more impactful place.

Levels of Leadership Agility - A Framework for Integral Leadership, Bill Joiner.

A guided tour of the levels (stages) of leadership development that emerged from the 5 years of research that went into writing Leadership Agility, one of today’s foremost works on integral leadership. Bill will tell stories that will make this very practical framework come alive, guide participants in assessing their own agility level or that of a leader of their choice, discuss key factors involved in transforming from one level to another, and end with a Q&A session.

Integral Inquiry as Presencing Simultaneous Opposites, Bert Parlee.

Our developing transition to global frameworks will represent the defining dynamics over the coming decades. The growing pains that will be involved with this magnitude of transformation cannot be overestimated. As leaders, we will be called to not only revolutionize our individual identities (from nation state members to world members - which will be epic in proportion), but to also help facilitate change for individuals and groups striving to manage such fundamentally destabilizing realignments. Necessary deaths and rebirths will echo recursively through our emotional, psychological, spiritual and cultural selves, and will occur as elegantly as possible if we are able and willing to embrace our often contradictory, larger natures by means of an integral inquiry and dialogue process.

Transforming, Victoria Wilson-Jones.

What does it take to be an integral leader? How do we become agents of change? We can dedicate ourselves to developing a healthy relationship with the chaos of change. We can stand in the middle of the unknown and open to the inner resources that are the well spring of humanities richest visions. Know your strengths, know your shadow, know where you pull back from the truth. In integral leadership we lean into the chaos of change. We open to our core authenticity and live from that radiance. In this end of the evening gathering, we will explore how to clarify and deepen our intention for self development. We can explore the power of staying fully present with all of our skills and resources for the duration of the conference.

Breakout Sessions:

In Times of Crisis, Philosophy Is Not A Luxury: The American Philosophical Roots of Integral Theory and Evolutionary Enlightenment, Jeff Carriera.

In challenging times we are tempted to see philosophy as a luxury item that we can no longer afford. In this session we will examine why an exploration of philosophy is critical in times of crisis and explore the deep connection between Integral Theory, Evolutionary Enlightenment and the long tradition of evolutionary philosophy in America. Along the way we will discover that classic American philosophers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and John Dewey have a great deal to offer to our world in crisis.

Somatic Support for Conscious Leadership, Deborah Boyar.

An experiential immersion into an oft-unexplored yet essential dimension of our being -- the experience of Self through the physical body. Participants will learn basic practices to ground, center, and establish healthy boundaries to allow for optimal energy flow along the self/other continuum. Embodying these practices gives leaders a palpable magnetism that serves as a "strange attractor" for evolution.

Embodying the Spirit of Integral Leadership - An Experiential Immersion in First and Second Person Perspectives, Deborah Boyar and Terry Patten

Understanding Integral Leadership involves more than third-person distinctions; it also requires direct feeling immersion in the ground from which integral leadership arises. In this session, we'll undertake a series of exercises that evoke direct subjective and intersubjective experiences that support development and build leadership skills. In the interest of wholeness, all this will be concisely framed in a thirrd-person philosophical context.

Working Roundtable: Skillful Means to Engage the Best of Orange and Help It Evolve, Barbara Brown.

The current world economic crisis is something Clare Graves would have predicted: stages of development become toxic before the adherents grow into the next level. It is too easy to criticize such toxicity, instead of offering more compelling alternatives.

Come and join a working roundtable with the object of co-creating problem analyses and solution propositions in language and symbols that are attractive and meaningful to the stage of development known as modern, the Achiever or Orange. We will start with a couple of documentary film clips showing positive Orange in action. Please bring some examples of the language you hear/read when Orange is on a roll. As a first exercise we will individually and as a group get in touch with all the positive things Orange has done for our civilization and develop a shared vision of a bright vibrant Orange community engaged in solving global issues. Then, we will break into small working groups around several key issues. Each group would try to write a succinct statement of the problem. Once the issue is clear, the group would list a few obvious Green solutions. Then, each problem statement and solution would be rewritten in positive Orange language. We have two goals: 1) Each of us would individually become attuned to Orange bashing and learn to reframe everything we say in a way more likely to elicit positive action. We would have a standard set of positive opportunity statements and responses we think might be attractive to Orange that we can distribute for the integral community to use when discussing issues with the business community.

Integral Real Estate Development: Designing Habitats for People and Planet, Christian Chernock.

The Green Building movement has taken root and is staged for large scale systems change in the US building sector, but are energy efficient designs and building practices enough to allow habitats to thrive into the 21st century? For those interested in the future of the built environment and how we inhabit it this session will take a look at the sustainability movement through the Integral lenses. Come away seeing how the AQAL model can organize the complexity of an entire economic sector while also being a useful tool for action plans in the field. Use these second tier perspectives to help design your own thriving habitats in both your professional and private lives.

Everything That Matters: Intervening on the Insides and Outsides at Every Level of System (An Integral Change Case Study), Allison Conte and Tom Curren.

Allison and Tom will share integral applications and interventions that led to whole-system strategic change at a world-renowned think tank. The case study includes applications and methods drawn from Integral Theory, Gestalt theory, Intentional Change Theory, Real Time Strategic Change, Polarity Management, Holacracy, values work, Appreciative Inquiry, adult development, emotional intelligence and Enneagram, among others. And, since the best consultants get paid to learn, Allison and Tom will share insights gleaned from bumping into their clients and bumping into each other as they navigated through numerous obstacles and speed bumps in their work.

Masculine/Feminine: Conscious Evolution Requires Something More Precise, Elizabeth Debold and Cindy Wigglesworth.

We cannot afford imprecision in our language or our thoughts if we are seeking real conscious evolution. The words feminine and masculine have no clear operational definitions; evoke many different meanings to different people; and the words tend to lock us up rather than move us forward. Do we have the courage to reach for more precise language? There are beautiful polarities at play here - polarities which we need to master to move to Tier Two or Integral / Enlightened stages by any name. Elizabeth and Cindy will share their thoughts and facilitate a conversation on this topic.

Integral Life Practice (ILP): A Model of Support for Turbulence and a Way Forward for Transformation, Gary Hawke.

In these times of turbulence, something new must emerge. It is therefore vital that Integral Leadership and Integral Leaders practice from a Zero Point. To deepen our awareness we need a working model that supports the transformation of ourselves and the people we work with at whichever level of the Spiral. Integral Life Practice recognizes the deep structure of humanity our sameness and provides the supporting structure and framework needed as we drive towards transformation. Gary will lead and support participants in an investigation of their own Zero Point through the use of ILP. He also will address ILP can support the people they work with as they move from turbulence to transformation.

Integral Leadership Roundtables; Sharing Your All Quadrants, Levels, and Lines Practice and Edge, Mike Hohnen and Christine Brautigam.

This interactive workshop is designed for you to work in small rotating groups to learn and share how you have utilized integral theory in practical aspects of leadership from personal to professional. Share what you know to be true, what has worked and has not worked, what you have learned, what is difficult and what is easy.

This session will be facilitated by Mike Hohnen, a service management specialist from Europe and a passionate advocate of Action Learning, and Christine Brautigam, who applies integral to all aspects of her life from consulting on process/organizational improvement and IT project management to raising teens in Colorado. Come share and learn with us.

Integral Leadership Coaching, Integral Institute/Integral Life.

Integral Life believes it currently to be "the most powerful application of integral in the world."

An Advanced Experiential-learning Laboratory Adventure for Integral Inter-subjective Exploration: A Realtime Concurrent Inquiry into and Enactment of Integral Leadership In Action, Larry Kiehl.

This is a realtime concurrent and synchronized inquiry into and enactment of the meaning of "What Is Integral Leadership In Action In Turbulent And Transformative Times? In this session we will endeavor to enact an I/we state of interpersonal functioning that seamlessly engenders the three qualities of "authentic presence", "meta-awareness", and "emergent-ability" in any moment as leadership dynamics. It is intended to support our opening into an essentially Integralist-stages/high-Subtle state of Integralist functioning. Follow this link for an extended description and preparation for this engaging experiential session.

Topic: On the Use of Developmental Metrics and Models in Leadership Contexts, Zak Stein.

There are currently no quality control standards concerning the creation and use of developmental approaches in leadership contexts. But metrics and models from developmental psychology are frequently brought to bear this way, and as times get touch their use will increase. How should these psychological technologies be built? And how should they be deployed? A large-scale study of leadership development and decision-making conducted by The Developmental Testing Service grounds a discussion about what is possible and preferable.

From Achievement to Alchemy: Expeditionary Leadership as Transformative Practice, Jamie Wheal.

Weekend workshops offer fleeting insights, but rarely foster long term development. Long term development requires just that, a long time - time that today’s leaders rarely have to commit to even the most promising programs. So, how can we offer powerful, concise training programs that, to paraphrase Huston Smith, turn "passing illuminations into abiding light?" Learn in this presentation about one initiative to meet these challenges -- Stagen’s Leadership for Emergent Executives and Entrepreneurs Program (LEEP) which combines the Leadership Development Profile with an immersive, experiential adventure in stunning wilderness terrain.

Coming Together Beyond Ego: How to Live the Tenets of Evolutionary Enlightenment, Jeff Carriera and Elizabeth Debold of EnlightenNext.

So many of us now have the tools, resources, and perspectives to actually create a new world one based on a recognition that the inner and the outer, consciousness and culture, are one, and that who we are isn't separate from the 14-billion-year epic of cosmic evolution. If we want to create a new culture, we have to be free of the old. But how do we do that? How can we let go of what's holding us back, and truly embrace an enlightened, evolutionary relationship to life? Join us to learn how we can develop and enact new human possibilities.

Torah in Nature, Oz DiGennaro and Ori Har.

In the backdrop of the natural beauty of the Texas countryside, Oz and Ori offer participants a first-hand consciousness-building experience, using Integral themes and concepts. This is an experiential journey or what could be called a combination of Carlos Castaneda, Primal Scream, Gestalt, improvisational dance, Kabbalistic meditation on the seventy-two names of G-d. Perhaps similar to a very abbreviated Vision Quest. We’ll be using much less mind and much more body and soul. We’ll meditate, take a peek into our shadow and try to examine the eight stages (multiplied by four states=32 points of contact with reality). That means we can have a five-minute visit at each point, or we may not do it that way!
Please bring your journal, your outdoor clothes and shoes, and a substantial snack for the session. We’ll be walking and sitting on the ground. Minimal physical abilities required. If you have questions, please contact Oz.

Introducing the 4 Layers Analysis for Integral Leaders, Clint Fuhs.

This session serves leadership practitioners looking for a deeper dive into the heart of the explanatory and investigative power of quadrants and levels. Understanding the integral approach is just the beginning--once you do, questions about what it is good for and how it can help your professional life naturally arise. (If you are new to integral, the earlier intro session will prepare you for the more advanced work here). We will start with a live simulation, one which cultivates a relevant and shared experience that will then be investigated through a new integral analysis tool called 4-layers--a modular, flexible, and deeply integrally-explicit tool for investigating any leadership challenge.

As our collective intelligence is brought to bear on the same complex scenario, we will realize the following aims: (1) How to bring an integral view into our professional lives with clear insight and results replacing jargon and confusion, (2) How to see the dynamics of any leadership scenario in all their complexity and nuance, and (3) How the awareness of a truly Integral leader permeates and penetrates the very nature of every moment.
